
Liquid Cooling Is No Longer Optional
Five years ago, liquid cooling was a niche for supercomputers. Today it is the default answer for AI servers, dense battery racks and high-power charging stations. The reason is simple physics: water carries heat roughly 50 times more effectively than air, and chip power is climbing every generation. When a GPU module exceeds 700 watts, fans run out of headroom – and liquid takes over. For thermal designers and buyers, that shift means one thing: the aluminium cold plate has become a core commodity component.
Cold Plates: Where Extrusion Fits
A cold plate is a flat, high-conductivity aluminium plate with internal channels that carry coolant. The base is usually 6063-T6 or 6061-T6 – extruded or rolled – because temper strength keeps thin walls stable under pressure. The plate absorbs heat from the chip or module above, and the flowing coolant carries it away. Extrusion plays two roles here: the plate blank itself, extruded to near-net width with tight flatness, and the channel cover or manifold profile that closes the flow path. No other process matches extrusion for long, thin, flat blanks at this cost.
Flow Channels: Machined, Brazed or Extruded
Three routes shape the coolant channels. Machined channels: CNC-milled serpentine or pin-fin patterns, maximum design freedom, higher cost per plate. Brazed channels: a machined cover bonded to the base, ideal for medium volumes and leak-tight performance. Extruded channels: simple straight or multi-pass channels formed directly in the profile, lowest cost for high-volume standard plates. The right choice depends on volume, pressure rating and thermal target – and many manufacturers mix all three across their product line.
The Liquid-Cooled Assembly Chain
A cold plate never works alone. The loop needs manifolds to distribute coolant, quick couplings, a pump and a heat exchanger – and every structural piece in that chain can be an extruded aluminium profile. Manifolds, housings, mounting frames and rack rails all come off the same presses that make the plates. For buyers, that is an opportunity: one extruder that handles plates, manifolds and housings collapses the supply chain into a single RFQ.
